Should People Drink Distilled Water for Their Wellness?

The question should people drink distilled water is a good one. In the search for the best water to drink how does distilled water rate?

In the search for clean, safe, drinking water the question, about drinking distilled water is a valid one. While you want the best water to drink, soak your nuts, add to your raw soups and sprout your seeds, should you be using distilled water? Distilled water is very pure, possibly the purest water that can be found. At first glance this is good, very good, but there just may be a cloudy side to this pure water.

What is Distilled Water?

The definition of distilled water is according to “water from which impurities, as dissolved salts and colloidal particles, have been removed by one or more processes of distillation; chemically pure water."

To define the term distilled water even better is to say that distilled water is simply cooled and collected steam. The processing of distillation involves heating water to a boiling point and then collecting the steam; the cooled steam is referred to as distilled water.

Distilled water may be one of the purest types of water. The distillation process leaves behind many of the impurities commonly found in water including salt, hard minerals and bacteria. The solid materials are too heavy to be converted to steam.

At first glance, distilled water seems to be the best type of water to drink. 

Is Distilled Water More Acidic?

The pH of pure water is 7, perfectly neutral. The pH scale has a rage of 0 to 14, with substance lower than 7 acidic and substance higher than 7 alkaline. Pure water, composed only of hydrogen and oxygen, has a pH of 7.

Distilled water usually has a pH that is slightly more acidic, sometimes as low as 5.6. The reason why is because this totally pure water quickly absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. The “desire” for the water to absorb carbon dioxide gives the term “hungry” to distilled water. It is only under strict laboratory conditions that distilled water has a pH of 7. So the question remains in the search for pure water, should people drink distilled water?

Benefits of Distilled Water

The obvious benefit of distilled water for drinking is that of purity. The process of heating the water then collecting the pure steam removes solid debris, heavy metals, organic contaminates, impurities, fluoride and chemical compounds. However, distilling water to filter out impurities does not remove all toxins. Some solvents are actually carried into the distillate. Most water filtration systems that distill water also use a reverse osmosis system to further clean the water.

Distilled Water for Drinking and Your Raw Food Diet

Drinking distilled water may mean that you are drinking a very pure water product. However, it may actually be too pure. Distilled water is lacking all of the trace minerals and important electrolytes that naturally occur in water.

If it is true that distilled water is “hungry” water, it may affect the way you use distilled water in you raw food diet. The acidic nature of the water and its lack of trace minerals may attract and leach out some of the minerals and important nutrients from your foods, especially those that you soak such as raw nuts and seeds. You have adopted a raw lifestyle since you are more nutrient-conscious, therefore, the goal is to preserve your vital enzymes and nutrients, not kill them.

Although some health experts have advocated the benefits of drinking distilled water almost exclusively, this is not not the opinion of all health experts. Other health experts believe that there are negative long-term effects of drinking distilled water.

The Benefits of Drinking Distilled Water are Cloudy,
Not Clear

Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. alternative health physician, internationally renowned researcher and author of Your Body's Many Cries for Water is not an advocate of distilled water for drinking.

Other health experts suggest that drinking distilled water is beneficial only for a limited time and for a specific purpose suggests it be done as part of a detoxification regimen. Dr. Zolton P. Ronan says, “Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time)."

The answer to the question should people drink distilled water seems to be clear. Distilled water for drinking does have its benefits. However, distilled water for drinking on a regular basis may not be compatible with the goal of your healthy raw lifestyle. The source for clean, safe, healthy drinking water may not be a distiller.

Rather, check out and possibly invest in another way to purify your water. And, as you know, a true raw foodist like yourself cringes at the idea of killing heat touching anything that will eventually go into your body!  Purify the old way to preserve all of the important “raw” minerals and raw nutrients that are naturally occurring in this nourishing liquid.
